Laura DiGiovanna- Clinton Concept

7 Corners is an area in SE Portland that not too many people outside of the area know about. It’s quite easy for a person to drive right on by while passing through from Division to Powell. Little do people know, there is quite the amazing, colorful world over there! No mat- ter where you turn to there is a pop of color and interesting people, culture, and places to see.

Hawthorne (Bagdad Theater)

Hawthorne will never be the same once we're done with it.
While Hawthorne seems like Oregon's own little hipster shopping village, USA just wait 'til the sun sets and the street becomes alive with the night. Instead hipster we rapidly shifted gears towards the night life and the crowd that it drives along with the feelings it invokes deep inside them. Killjoys: "MAKE SOME NOISE" and watch out for the Alice in Wonderland limelight of Hawthorne Blv. when the night lights begin to shine.

Orwellian

With all the recent activity in congress concerning the PIPA and SOPA bills I was reminded about the dystopian novel by George Orwell, 1984. In the book the government controls everything about it's citizens lives. It's this idea of constant surveillance that was the inspiration for my first project.

I got my inspiration from this beautiful picture , the leaves, the colors , the flowers.
All my inspiration images that I choose are focused on the analogous color scheme.

Le Nouveau Noir by Anna Foltz

My concept, Le Nouveau Noir or "the New Black" was born of the saying "pink is the new black" or "blue is the new black", or whatever the color of the moment is. This concept made "the new black" less specific in a universal celebration of color.  A vibrant, painterly textile is revealed through a chic female silhouette carved from hand-stamped black leather. The composition combines soft organic forms with more raw, industrial materials.

Maya Dahlgreen

I really love idea of neon color pops and pastels for an interesting, simple use of color. For this project I decided to create a print that could stand alone as a color pop paired with muted tones like black, white, and grey. I also love the look of watercolors and the smearing of paint. The look of dripping, stained colors is going to be popular come Fall/Winter 2012. I found these photos of a river in Colombia called the Caristales. Between the wet and dry season, algae grows in the river creating beautiful colors and designs. I used this literal water color for inspiration.

Laura DiGiovanna- Assign 1

My thought process really did start from the music video; Gotye "Somebody I used to know." I enjoyed the geometric shapes all coming together has a background and having certain shapes (in this case people) hidden within. The colors really helped with my inspiration and having a hidden message or image was very intriguing to me. From this I moved into using the shapes and colors to create other images with a hidden image and meaning behind them. I hope you enjoy it! :)

Sterling Blake | Assignment 1

Arizona’s neon sunsets are like a vibrant, free spirit in contrast to the dry, neutral hues the desert has to offer.  Shades of pink, peach, and yellow illuminate the sky and fade into purple and blue as night takes over the city of Phoenix.  The simple, but alluring way the colors feed in and out of each other reminded me of some landscape paintings by artist J.M.W Turner.  My textile is inspired of these two subjects.

Inspiration ~ Sweet Escape ~ Mariam Dadras

Feminine sweetness is the inspiration behind my computer generated print.

The concept for this design is linear perspective. The traditional linear perspective will be applied to two dimensional graphics as well as using its key methods to apply to three dimensional objects. Linear perspective graphically illustrates three dimensional forms by using parallel lines that will recede and overlap each other to create depth.

Project 1- Joan Tjhin

Concept Statement
Flower’s organic shapes and lines personify soft, feminine, and serene. Repetition and overlapping shapes leads our eyes to the most dominant point.  I incorporate the overlapping curve lines in order to create an active, lively yet gentle look. Different shades of color add a fresh and subtle looks.

Christie Chanthakhoun [Concept: Project 1]

I am...

a dreamer...
a creator...
a hopeful soul...

Natives believe the night air was filled with good and bad dreams. The legend of the Dream Catcher is that it captures the bad spirits and filters them, protecting us from evil and letting through only the good dreams. It is believed that each carefully woven web will catch bad spirit dreams and disappear by perishing with the first light of the morning sun...

Victoria Magda - Assignment 1 Concept

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE...
          THERE’S FIRE

Isn’t it interesting how old sayings can take on many different meanings?  Smoke is the telltale sign of danger and without it we may find it difficult to distinguish fact from fiction.  My inspiration comes from 1950‘s and 60‘s women who make smoking look mysterious and mischievous.  The colors and shapes during that era in advertising made way for an “anything goes” mentality.  The textile I created is based on symbolism, repetitive patterns, and my love for straight lines.

Vy Le: A Hidden Beauty

Project Concept

A dedicate and fragrant flower, often overlooked because of it poisonous and stubborn attitude (spread rapidly and hard to contain). However, just like how we often overlook things that are vile to us, we ignore what really is underneath. My concept represents the hidden beauties that are sometimes ignored.

Red Paper Lanterns. Tuyen Hoang

A red paper lantern is often associated with the Chinese New Year; a time where friends and families gather to share a special time together. Chinese New Year is an old tradition that is celebrated, but a twist is added to adapt to the Western style. My concept is to mix in the new with the old and still have it be functional.

Disco Rock N ROLL

The inspiration for this assignment was, “Disco Rock N Roll”. I recently went to a party at Skate World which has officially pumped me up to make any and everything disco related. As for mixing that into my personal style I added the rock n roll. I love the look of girls in torn denim and combat boots, with a “don't care” attitude. I have been seeing a lot of metallic and gold colors trending as well as the DIY glitter feel, and I love it.
I through this image into Instagram to add a fun effect for this post. :)

I have always been fascinated with how our world looks from the sky.  Divided by humans into complex geometric and organic forms, creating a web of beautiful patterns that connect the world forming one huge documentary or artwork of how we exist.  Every time I travel I find myself peering out the window trying my best to capture some aerial photographs, one of my favorite aerial photographers is Yanh Arthus Bertrand.  He explores our world through an aerial view, one in which can translate to our everyday patterns which can be mimicked in all types of artwork including textiles.

Concept:
During the Industrial Revolution, cities were competing for dominance and power. Architects such as William Le Baron Jenney and Lous Sullivan invented "skyscrapers". Thanks to designers like them, dominance and power was found through innovation. Since then, the urban world still reflects much of their designs, but we continue to innovate, adding our own flair; deviating from that very foundation.

P L A S T E R

AN ASPECT OF DESIGN THAT MAKES THINGS INTERESTING IS THE JUXTAPOSITION OF VARIOUS ELEMENTS. PLASTER IS THE OLD WORLD LOOK OF WORN PLASTER SHOWN IN MODERN COLORS OF GREYS AND CORAL. INTERIOR DESIGN & APPAREL DESIGN ARE BOTH SHOWN IN PLASTER WITH THE EFFECT OF A WALL FINISH ON A TEXTILE.

Arielle Heinonen: Project 1 Concept

Textile With a Twist
Concept: A knot holds a beautiful simplicity that is often unnoticed. The fibers take a twisted, never-ending journey in order to create an organic shape like this one. Overlapping pieces of yarn form a work of art, allowing a person to stare, their mind trying to finding the beginning or ending point. My textile is an abstracted representation of the twisting fibers in a knot.

Quentin Orr: Polka Dots

Concept Image: Polka Dots

Project 1 Inspiration

The polka dot is a pattern that has been seen as early as 1854 when it was printed inside of the Yale Literary Magazine. (Volume 122, Page 7.) It also has been given reference to the dance named the "polka" linking the two together for similarities visually and with rhythm. The only two reasons I felt inspired to do a take on this pattern is because I saw an awesome dalmatian the other day and it was a challenge. I have never been a big fan of the pattern but I figured it could be time to make a version I could stand.

Courtney Roberts: Assignment 1

Wicked Enchantment was inspired by the romantic prints of Alexander McQueen and the history behind the wicked Queen of England, Mary I. Early depictions of Queen Mary show her mystery, strength, and power.  What lie unseen were her wicked ways, the legend we know today. The wicked queens of the past used their exterior beauty to enchant in order to fulfill their hearts desire. My concept represents a modern take of the power of femininity and independence, mixing beauty, strength, and wicked charm…
